IceHL Northeast: Final Names

The final names for the IceHL's Northeast Division are in! Hundreds of you made your voice heard by rating the finalists for each franchise. So here are the winners.
  • Boston COLONIALS
average rating 3.84/5 by 479 people

  • Hamilton STEELCATS
average rating 3.03/5 by 321 people

  • Montreal OLYMPIQUES
average rating 3.47/5 by 371 people

  • New York GUARDIANS
average rating 2.99/5 by 309 people

  • Quebec ARMADA
average rating 3.26/5 by 347 people

Based on these names, your task — should you choose to accept it — is to brand the franchise. You choose the color scheme and design primary, secondary and script logos around that. Additional logos may or may not be included in the voting process.

Submit your logo art by email to me at icethetics@gmail.com. Do not post links to artwork in the comments. They will be deleted and not considered for use in this project. I'm also outlining guidelines for submissions below. If you don't follow them, your work will probably not be included.

Northeast logo submission deadline: November 1

If you want your submission included, follow these instructions:
  • DO NOT STEAL ARTWORK. Logos copied or adapted from professional trademarked logos will not be permitted.

  • Submit three (3) logos: primary, secondary and script. Use a white background. If your logo requires a white outline (think Lightning or Capitals), then use a gray background with the white outline included. ALL 3 LOGOS will be used in the voting process. If you leave out one, your work may be disqualified.

  • Submit vector art if possible. I will accept .ai, .psd and .pdf files. If you cannot submit vector art, you must be able to provide high quality images in .jpg or .png files ONLY. All other file types may be disqualified.

  • You must include your credit within the graphic itself as well as the email. This can be your real name or a pseudonym. I need them in both places so I can easily search my email to find your artwork and email address. Failure to do so may result in disqualification.

  • By submitting your own original artwork to any Icethetics email address, you agree to grant permission of its use for online or print publication by Icethetics. Do not watermark your logos or they will be disqualified.

  • No jersey concepts, please. That will be a later step in this process.

I tried to be specific here but I'm happy to answer any additional questions you may have via email. I was very clear about this but keep in mind that if you do not properly follow the instructions above, your work will likely be disqualified. So read them carefully.

Just so everyone is aware, when it comes time to choose a logo for each team, the process will work basically the same as the name ratings. Logo rating pages will be posted for each team and up to 20 logo submissions will be available to rate. I'm sorry I can't include more but this assures that all worthy submissions will get a fair shake.

The difference here is that once the rating period has ended, there will be a vote on Icethetics of the top 3 rated logos for each team. This assures that we choose the logo everyone wants.

Start submitting your logos!

Just throwing this out there, but wasn't there a rule about the nicknames being unique and not already in use?

In that case, you've got a bit of problem with Montreal.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gatineau_Olympiques

The Gatineau Olympiques have been around for a while, playing in the QMJHL section of the CHL. They've had a lot of guys come through their ranks, from Luc Robitaille and Jeremy Roenick, to Jose Theodore and Martin Biron.

And Gatineau is only like 100 miles from Montreal...

it better be toronto tritons -- it would be so stupid if there was a team in hamilton instead of toronto even if this is just a made up league

steel cats is to close to tigercats like hamiltons cfl team

I vote for Hamilton because I HATE having the same initials for the city and the nickname

I voted for Hamliton as well. Alliteration usually sounds cheesy.

Man, you're being nice with "cheesy"

Alliterations (thanks for the word) sucks!!!

Evidence A: Calgary Cavalry (worst-ever-ever-e-ver)

Just out of curiosity, what is it about "alliteration" that bugs you? Other than "sounds cheesy" can you give a legit reason why it sucks? I personally think it flows well and for marketability offers poetic cohesion.

I don't think it's fair for Toronto NOT to have a team. Of course, that's me being a GTA guy, but it feels wrong for Hamilton to go over Toronto in this case. And Steelcats would make sense if steel and "cats" or tigers had anything to do with each other. Another CHEESY random two word combination. I hate them. How about Ironlions. Make sense? Exactly. Tritons has a ring to it and isn't just a random word. maybe if some people used a dictionary. I swear, it's a great resource.

woohoo, the Boston Colonials are my second suggestion team that became official!

well... the legit reason I think it sucks is subjective, it's a thing I have... to me it seems like, "yeah, I'll brand a team for Calgary, let me get my dictionary and open on C... look, cavalry, it sounds like the city, great!!!"

and I think a lot of double C's are gonna be here, or double T's if Toronto wins.

I really think Toronto should have a team, and with another name I'd voted for it, but the T-thing disappoints me

(you may have noticed... my biggest problem is with Cavalry)

I would agree with the random rhyming but I do think an absolute avoidance of alliteration is not a logical argument. There are some great names out there that are precisely contrary to your objections (i.e., Boston Bruins, Pittsburgh Penguins, Washington Wizards). Not many out there but still I think they are very rhythmic.

So if Toronto wins, that would be 7 teams having an alliteration. Wouldn't be surprised if half the teams in the league consist of alliterations, which would be fun.

Well, right now the Hamilton Steelcats are leading the Toronto Tritons 53% to 47% (by about 30 votes).

Sounds interesting...Any idea when we get to voting on the South or Southeast Division (whichever would be this upcoming week) or when we get to voting on the Pacific Division's logos?

What is with the fascination with the name Voyaguers. It's in like EVERY poll.

Cameron said...

this is gonna suck if toronot doesnt have a team it will be stupid
i also thing that if hamilton is pick the name should be switched to ironhides like that guy said
steelcats is so close to the tigercats practically cheating the rules

Cameron said...

like if this league was actually real there would be a huge rivalry between hamiton and montreal

NAAATT

myabe the team should just be called ontario something

I think the majority of the nicknames suck and will be surprised if the logos that people come up with disappoint many.

roccot said...

... not be surprised if the logos aren't very good that is...

asnowballschance said...

Wow, the majority of the names for the South Division are terrible nor are they intimidating.

These names suck so bad... good luck doing logos for these.

I think the name submitting / voting finally fell to the lowest common denominator.

Idea for next time:
Let the artists submit a full proposal. Name, colors, logo. That way the teams will be named after something that's interesting to draw. (Not 'Olympics' spelled in pigeon French).

Wow....Quebec Armada... If I wasn't a fan of the Quebec Nordiques, I would love to see a hockey team based en Quebec City named The Armada. Such a beautiful reference to the importance of boats and seafaring for our city.

Wonderful idea, really!
