Canucks Third Jersey LEAKED!

Yes, it's true! I have it for you right here on Icethetics. The Vancouver Canucks' third jersey for the 2008-09 season has leaked!

Have a look for yourself. It's got the updated stick-in-the-rink logo as well as the new Johnny Canuck "V" logo on the shoulders.

I'm thrilled about that Johnny Canuck logo making its way onto a jersey. I think it's such a great design. Also interesting to note about this jersey is the complete lack of the orca logo. It's similar in overall design to their current home and road sweaters expect for the the striping pattern. The colors are the same.

It's important to note that this is not an official image. The Canucks have yet to make any sort of announcement regarding their third jersey. This is merely what's believed to be a leaked photo of it.

Johnny Canuck should've been on the front. The stick and rink logo just looks stupid on the front.

I really like it. The updated stripe pattern is nice, I like the updated stick n' rink on the front and the fact that the JC logo finally made it on!

David B said...

Great to see Johnny back! Little surprised to not see the white stick and rink logo on the dark jersey though.

P.S. What's with the watermark orgy Chris?

opiatedsherpa said...

YES! YES! Good gawd, YES! Now, the only question is... do I get Kesler, Burrows or Edler on the back?

Hockey Week said...

seriously, think you have enough watermark there?

it's a good jersey. nothing special considering their current homes

Nathan said...

Not too sure about the striping pattern. I prefer the original. Also, I wish the two logos were swapped.

However, overall I like it. At least there is no Vancouver written over the logo.

Hockey Week said...

the site looks really really unbalanced with all of the boxes of polls and info on the right side. not a fan. everything worked rather well with the new info right in the center

Richard said...

Does the Watermark really need to be that potent?

Andre said...

VERY, VERY SHARP!! :)) If the NHL, Heaven forbid, had corporate ads on uniforms, I would pick McDonalds because, "I'm Lovin' It!" Knock on wood. Lol. While I agree with Jeff and Nathan, that the Johnny Canuck V would have been my choice to be put on the front, but the modified Stick 'n Rink looks awesome! At least Johnny Canuck, after 38 long years, has finally found his way on the NHL Canucks' sweater in some shape and form. I love the idea of not inverting the blue and white in the Stick logo and the striping looks very bold. Yes, it's not official, but this is THE BEST sweater in Canucks history. It incorporates the true heritage of the Vancouver Canucks with a traditional but updated look. Hey, NO VERTICAL PIPING! :)) You can take it to the bank that this will be the Canucks full-time sweater in a year or two. The Johnny Canuck V will then be on the front of a third green sweater. It is just too bad that Trevor Linden retired one season too soon. He would look great in this sweater. Even better: Trevor hoisting the Canucks' first Stanley Cup in this sweater. Bottom line, I LOVE IT!!!! :))))

I'll agree that the site looks unbalaced with the current setup. The last one before this was great IMO.

As for the jersey? Utter Sweetness.

sh0ez said...

Looks sweet. I enjoy it.

As for the site, I agree with previous comments, it is now unbalanced. Polls should be back to the left. I do like the new header and such! Looks great!

Nice jersey, however I dislike that the home jersey is essentially the same if you're just watching a game. I have a feeling that next year, this will be the primary and the third will be a different color (Green?) featuring JC logo, with the orca appearing only on the white road jersey.

Mark said...

I echo the above comment. Great looking jersey, but this is for all intents and purposes the home jersey everyone thought they would have when they unveiled the new jerseys last year. I don't really have a problem with their current jerseys, I just wish they would do something different. Bring back the V sweater and change the colors to blue, green and white, or do a green jersey with the Johnny Canuck logo.

Curtle said...

If this leak is true, I know which Canucks Jersey I want to see under the tree in December. I love it! Plus I'm sort of glad that VC logo is nowhere in sight.

Hopefully when the required time for the current edge jerseys has passed, the oweners will come to their senses and make this the first jersey and end the Canucks' "identity crisis".

Anonymous said...

Put the polls back on the left!!!!

Anonymous said...

I like it but it's not very original, since, like others have said, it will look like the current home jersey from the stands. Plus, it's not that different from the last Canucks third (which I like better).

One more thing, the new double headed sidebar looks horrible! Please change it back Chris!

Kevin Y said...

Chris, I really think you should watermark this image. I mean by looking at it, I have absolutely no idea that it came from Icethetics.

As for the jersey, it's really nothing we haven't seen before. They've done this type of jersey befoer, and have used it as the alternate before. I don't understand what is so special about it, and I don't understand what is so great about the "Johnny Canuck" logo, or even what it is. Granted, those are just my opinions.

azac said...

I absolutely love that jersey and no, the stick-in-rink logo does not look stupid on the front, it's right at home where it belongs, front and center, just like the original beautiful jerseys. It was a chest logo before a shoulder patch and it's about time they went back to it. Hopefully this spells the end of the orca logo once and for all. This new jersey has it right. The right logo, the right colours and the right scheme. Love it.

ecoulson1 said...

Count me as a fan of that jersey. Sharp!

Charlie @ Sabres Not Slugs.com said...

I know Andre must be pretty happy to see Johnny V on the sweater. That jersey is very sharp! Definitely one of the best third jerseys so far.

Unknown said...

Q: We want our alternate jersey to stand out this season, so the question is, what do we do?
A: Let's space out the stripes some, maybe make them thicker. And... er... use the third jersey logo from a few years back. No one will no the difference!

You're right, no one will know the difference.

asnowballschance said...

the new wordmark and format of this blog is a huge downgrade and not visually appealing.

Unknown said...

_about the new look of the blog:
i think the pools should be back on the left + i think the new logo reads «icelhelics». does not work.
_about the canucks possible 3rd:
i would have prefered the same design on a green jersey. this looks too close to the current home jersey + to me, the 'johnny canuck' will always recall the vachon logo (http://www.brandsoftheworld.com/brands/0001/0162/brand.gif). sorry canucks fan.

Glovesave29 said...

That uni looks GREAT. Now just get some road whites with the same stripe pattern and the logos reversed....JC on the front and the stick-in-rink "C" on the shoulder and they have a really nice set.

Unknown said...

THAT is a hockey jersey!! Enough with the armpit stripes. Crisp clean classic.

awildermode said...

simple logo swap...because nothing was wrong with the current jersey...besides the orca logo.

awesome, i wish i was a more of a canuck fan so i could appreciate it more. love it.

nhl, take note...they did not go with black

GoSabres21 said...

that is a beautiful jersey...if i was a canuck fan...that would be top of my list to buy...hell i might buy one myself lol...i think this jersey beats the sabres...anyway its a great jersey...they did what the sabres did (minus the piping) by updating the old look...i give it a 10 out of 10

Drew Celestino said...

Fantastic jersey! That is truly gorgeous. Time to put the orca to bed.

And Chris, honestly, pick a look for this site and roll with it. Too much meddling goign on. The site is quite unbalanced with all of your side-box content on one side, as someone has already mentioned. And yeah... go a little overboard with the Watermark tool in Photoshop did we?

Dennis said...

Sheesh, let the man tinker a little with his site.

Personally, I call fake on this one. The crest seems unnaturally large in proportion to the sweater, and I fully expect a vintage white V in the sleeve striping.

Anonymous said...

Orca + Johnny Canuck = Perfect, Hockey stick in rink = bad and boring. Sort of like this new layout and look, go back the old way.

John said...

I love the uniform, it's got a nice classic feel.

As far as the site goes, I like the new top logo, Chris. It's very clean. I'd still suggest keeping the polls on the left though, only because all of the logos floating around between the polls and content bars seem to make it a bit crowded. Besides that, nice work.

roccot said...

totally off topic...

Are NFL and NBA names ok for the new IceHl league? Raptors? Buccaneers?

Logo doesn't look right on the Nucks jersey. Too many outlines all the same weight. by the end of them you lose the shape of the rink.

Anonymous said...

I hate the new rink logo, they totally blew it. It is too big but I guess all the teams increased their logo size. The main problem is that the vintage blues are supposed to have a WHITE RINK!

That Johnny Canuck logo looks different from the "Vachon" version we've been seeing around. the toque shading is different and it looks like the head fits better into the V (like he's wearing a jersey himself) but the overall shape of that patch is pretty ugly.

if this is the real deal I am very disappointed.

Dandy said...

Nice jersey. I like the stripes. I'm not sure if I like these stripes or the current home stripes better. Its a toss-up. I wonder if they will change the striping for the home/away next year.

The Stick-in-a-box logo is cool but I would rather swap the two, having Johnny Canuck on the front.

Andre said...

It's great to see that many people are liking it. And for those who still prefer the original Stick logo, keep something in mind: The Washington Capitals current wordmark crest is also a modified version of their original. When they unveiled their new uniforms last summer, fans in DC were thrilled. I think our modified crest looks better than the Caps. The truth is, is that this was supposed to be the Canucks' new sweater last year, but because of the licencing issue over the Johnny Canuck V, the Canucks had no choice but to have a copy and paste version of the vintage and orca uniforms. The Vancouver wordmark was added just to "dumb down" the Orca. What the Canucks are wearing, like it or not, is just a transitional sweater. I didn't think that the modified Stick crest would look good on the front, but it looks fantastic. It will take some getting used to for some, but it will grow on those who aren't too sure. And hey, if the Johnny Canuck V outsells the Stick in other merchandise sales, the Canucks may swap the both logos on their new blues and future greens. Overall, very sharp. In fact the original Stick didn't look like it was supposed to look on the vintage. The shaft was the same width as the blade. This looks much, much better. Can't wait until November 15!

Leafers LP said...

Bo-ring. Especially that stupid logo in the middle. People, learn to look at it as a logo. Who cares how old it is, it just simply does not look good! End of story.

It's like a girl only liking a man because he's old. Doesn't make sense. She'll most likely end up with someone her own age, sort of like...us? Whatever. Point is, it sucks. Same with the rest of the jersey minus the sweet shoulder patch.

Holy wordmark Batman! Chris, change isn't always good. In fact, today, it's just downright hideous.

I have been reading a lot of negative comments from CDC users at canucks.com regarding this leaked Canucks third sweater plus some of the people on this blog. The facts are this: teams in sports do update logos and designs. Many teams, unfortunately, go too far, others just tinker with what they have. What the Canucks supposedly have as third is an updated version of what they have had before. For those who don't like it and call us "sheep" for liking it, the sweater could look a whole lot worse, ie. like adding vertical stripes(Buffalo), having no horizontal stripes on the bottom(Edmonton, Toronto, & Phoenix), having a basketball/football look(Dallas & Atlanta), and keeping the Orca(Vancouver's "Slug") The Boston Celtics, for example, used to have serifs on their wordmark many years ago. The Red Wings original Wing 'n Wheel used to be shorter during the Howe/Lindsay/Sawchuk era. ALL THE CANUCKS did was go back to their roots and update the look just to give it an edge(pardon the pun). As for those CDC fans on canucks.com who want the Skate logo back, just think how popular this sweater will be once the Canucks hoist the Stanley Cup and not just the Clarence Campbell Bowl. For those who may not realize it, the updated Stick is actually a close-up and the fact that it's on a slight angle makes it look like it's in action. If players like Stan Smyl, Tiger Williams, Tony Tanti, Pavel Bure, and Trevor Linden had worn this look, people would love this sweater even more.

GO ANDRE! I agree 100% EVERY team updates their logo, that includes my beloved Montreal Canadiens, not since 1953, because that's when they perfected it. To me, this is Vancouvers Perfection. GO HABS GO NUCKS!

Urban dweller said...

Love it. Absolutely sharp. Way to break the news!

I think the white stripes are a little too thick, and Johnny Canuck needs to be the crest at some point. But otherwise I love this third.

Not too sure if I'd want to see the Canucks in a green third, when I reverse the colors in my head I just see the original California Seals sweater.

arkivel said...

wow. So you're actually deleting comments that are too negative. Is this blog affiliated with reebok or what?

It's about time we saw that Johnny Canuck logo on a jersey!

It looks amazing!

Chris,

This is your blog and you had to do what is right. And I apologize for the spat that I had had with the other party. However, I just felt that getting personal with another blogger was going too far. Afterall, this is a blog and people should have fun exchanging ideas and thoughts without personal attacks. Keep up the great work Chris. Go Canucks Go!!

Love the new jersey, just need to make a white version and have a good ol' whale burn!

Moosehabs said...

This jersey is exactly what I envisioned. Great job Canucks...FINALLY! Now just make this the regular sweater and then...here's a crazy concept...leave it alone!

Unknown said...

Spectacular!!! I don't mind the slight changes to the logo, makes it more defined that there really is a "C" hidden in there.

This one gets major points for having TRADITIONAL waist and sleeve striping, and the colors are bright and bold with no hint of black overtones!!

I'd put this alongside any of the Original Six jerseys. I love it!!

I LOVE THIS NEW JERSEY!

jeff chapman said...

Yes. This will do nicely.

Atlanta, take note.

CliffStef said...

Really? Are the Canucks trying to set a new record for the most jerseys used by any team in history?

Please stop tinkering with your jersey for at least 10-15 years.

Tederifico said...

This should have been the regular jersey to start off with last year! Could you imagine it in white! Wow!

looks awesome. thanks for the updates. your the only blog i ever visit

Yesterday, I went to Chris's other website. It is www.sportslogos.net. If you go there and check out the evolution of crests from other NHL teams, you can see that the Canucks are not the only team to alter their crest. Teams, including the Original Six, have made changes over the years, though, most not so recent. The Rangers' original shield looked more like an MLS team badge. When they won the Cup in 1940, they did not have serifs and 3D shadowing on the wordmark on their sweaters. Similiar overall look, but different design from what they had in 1994. They also tinkered with the badge over the years, up until 1978. The Bruins and Leafs have had several incarnations of their respective crests. The Vancouver Whitecaps modified their Ball on the Wave badge when they changed their name from 86ers back to Whitecaps. It wouldn't surprise me if they do some more tinkering if and when they join MLS.
The MOST important thing to remember is that the Canucks have gone back to their roots, but with an updated look that still looks traditional.

There's nothing wrong with the new design of Icethetics...I use Safari on Windows XP, so I can't see the new backgrounds and changes...oh well :P

the new stick in the rink logo is unnecessary as the old 1 still kicks ass - but i agree with the johnny canuck logo and the v, as an ode to the vancouver millionaires, should be up front and center. colors still great though.
