Winter Classic Jerseys Unveiled!

So did I fool anybody with my last post?

Tonight, the Winter Classic 2009 jerseys for the Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings were unveiled. Each team will be wearing a special one-time only throwback sweater for the New Year's Day game. Have a look!

The Detroit Red Wings jersey — as modeled above by Chris Chelios — is a replica of the original Detroit Cougars jersey from 1926. In 1930, the Cougars became the Falcons and two years after that the Red Wings moniker was adopted.

The Chicago Blackhawks sweater — modeled by Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane — made its original debut in 1935 but with a slightly different version of the Indian head logo. In the 700 meetings prior to the Winter Classic between these two teams, never have these two jerseys taken the ice at the same time — just another reason why this game will be special.

I've got a much better picture of the two jerseys here. You can see Bobby Hull there modeling the Hawks' new sweater.

As more pictures surface, I'll be sure to post them.

Just a shame that Detroit's jerseys have the winged wheel logos on the shoulders, it really tarnishes the vintage look. Otherwise they look way better than the candy-cane ones from 1991-2.

lol @ quisp

i really like that wings jersey... should keep a perma third. just hope they don't wear the white pants like in the post from earlier today

Andrew, why not? It would ruin it for me if they didn't- that's what the uniform looked like then, why not do it that way now?

its just that white pants would look kind of funny. it would be interesting...almost like camouflage if its snowing come new years day

Chicago picked the wrong jersey, those blow. They should have gone with... well anything else. As for Detroit they did well, other then adding the shoulder patch that is... would love to see those white pants. Thanks Chris for getting these photos for us.

I hope they wear white pants. Caps fans won't feel as bad for being the only stupids.

Didn't see this mentioned any where...
But during tonights Pens vs. Rangers game they had a segment where Dana Heinze, Penguins equipment manager, give a tour of the Penguins equipment vault. They showed how they kept a lot of historical game used equipment and where they house their new equipment.

The really interesting part is how he mentioned that they had to clear room in the vault for the new 3rd jersey. He then showed some of the new unused gloves and helmets, both in dark blue. Behind him on a rack were packaged powder blue jerseys. The crest on the jersey was not visible.

I was kind of surprised they aired this piece, since it was the first time anyone on the team publicly acknowledged that there will be a 3rd jersey this season.

I didn't know that Frankie Muniz (Malcolm in the Middle) plays for the Hawks!

Serious note: I wish that the Blackhawks would have made the circle of diameter smaller than the width of the off-white stripe. It looks a little weird that it overlaps the red stripes. I don't know how accurate their drawings are, but nhluniforms.com shows the original with the logo all inside the off-white stripe.

i think the Sabres and Pens from last year were better, but these are still cool

Funny how that jersey is similar to the concept third I posted a year ago.... :) Right down to the shoulder patches, too!

carpandean, that probalby has to do with the size. The logos are made in all one size, whereas the stripes are probably proportional to the size.

If I've learned anything from this website, it's that commenter's hate vertical piping and horizontal striping. What else is there to do(To get a second or third color on the jersey)? Horizontal piping is stupid, and vertical striping makes them look like soccer teams.

Only so many teams can wear shoulder yokes.

Hey I think the Blackhawks jersey look sharp! The Red Wings on the other hand... Well their jerseys always look stupid so yeah...

Also, I love you comment Quisp!

Ogre, most people hate one or the other. And the majority seem to like Horizontal striping and hate piping from my estimation.

Certainly, that's my position.

i dont like these jerseys at all...the ones from last years game was so much better...i think the teams should have gone with the ones from the 90's

I love both of these jerseys. The Wings jersey looks really sharp, and I like how they added the current logo to the shoulders. It gives it kind of a linking-past-and-present feel.

And the Hawks jerseys are just awesome. Those are some of the best this league has seen in a long time. I like how they cleverly edited the logo a bit from the original jerseys. It kinda ruins their authenticity, but it looks better. The colors on the original logo were kind of odd.

Kane and Toews' faces look shopped onto some anonymous models' bodies.

I'm not a fan of how the black laces on the Hawks' sweater blend into the rest of the collar. At least the yoke makes the Cougars' sweater white on white lace-up pop.

I don't get it... How did you throw us off with the post earlier today?
Sweet Detroit jersey but I think the Blackhawks jersey is actually really bad.

As a Wings fan, I quite like that jersey.... The Olde D looks solid, the horizontal stripe is awesome, and i don't mind the shoulder patches at all...

The only problem with that logo is the similarity to the Tigers, and thats not really that big of a problem anyway, lol...

Blackhawks jersey.... I dont know.... I'll have to see it on the ice, it looks alright, there just a certain 'je ne sais quoi' about it that i cant pinpoint... (pardon my french, its not spectacular loll)

some people may hate me for saying this... but this wings jersey should be become their regular.. i think that just because a jersey is classic it has to be great.. kinda like chris and the blackhawks.. seeing as i hate both teams i don't really care other than that..

GO BLUES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm interested to see if they're just going to use retro jerseys or if it will be full uniforms. Tan and white pants? I dunno. It'd be something different for sure.
The Winter Classic patch kinda bugs me. A modern logo like that on such old style jerseys doesn't seem right.
