Icethetics Season Preview, Part VI

Now more than a week into the regular season, I'm not so sure this still qualifies as a "preview" anymore. But it required a lot of research and for each team to have played at least a handful of games. Why? Part 6 of the Icethetics Season Preview is new goalie masks!

Let's dive in, starting with the biggest and most controversial. Martin Brodeur. The man has worn the same mask design for nearly his entire career — until this season. And he only made one change.

The devil design culled from the New Jersey Devils' logo has been on his head for years. This year it's been replaced by a stylized MB30 to promote his new web site.

Still, Brodeur has one of the classic mask designs left in the league. And speaking of classic, Dwayne Roloson and Mathieu Garon will have special masks and equipment for games in which the Oilers' wear their third jersey this season.

Below you can see pictures of Garon's new regular and vintage masks along with Dwayne Roloson's new Grant Fuhr-inspired retro mask.

And while we're on third jerseys, Cam Ward has updated his mask to go with the Hurricanes' new third jersey.

He's even got the new black and grey shoulder patch logo on the back of his helmet.

Some goalies got new masks because they got new teams, like Alex Auld, Andrew Raycroft, Olaf Kolzig, Cristobal Huet and Patrick Lalime.

Some stayed with their teams but got new masks anyway, like Rick DiPietro, Martin Gerber, Miikka Kiprusoff, Tim Thomas and Henrik Lundqvist.

Curtis Sanford let the fans redesign his mask. And Peter Budaj just likes The Hulk.

The other big one is Roberto Luongo whose design really hasn't changed, but he did add that captain's C to the chin. I posted a picture yesterday.

That's really all I thought were worth pointing out. If you think there are others, email me pictures and I'll add them to the post. In the meantime, here's that list I was telling you about.

If I missed anybody, let me know and send a picture so I can add them. And as you may have noticed, I'm not counting rookie goalies. I'm just talking about established goalies with mask changes.

And so officially ends the Icethetics Season Preview. Hopefully we'll do it all again next October!

The Ward mask looks like a Felix Potvin rip off.

None look very inspiring.

Maybe they all should have designer their own like Brodeur did with his.

both of those masks you have up there for the oilers are garons, the second is just his third jersey mask, roloson also has a different one, the oilers website had a picture of both of them

Thanks for catching that. I think I've got it sorted out now.

Jose Theodore. Though he didn't really change his mask at all as far as I can tell except to add the Caps primary logo on the chin.

the top left oilers one is garon's regular mask, beside it is his third mask, which has a picture of ranford on one side and fuhr on the other
The big image on the bottom is roloson's THIRD mask which is a replica of fuhr's mask back in the day, it even has the marks.
And chris, I am pretty sure that the top right image is the mask roloson wore in 06-07 when they wore the vintage jersey for three games in the latter half of the season

You're right. Man, those Oiler goalies are really confusing me tonight. I think I finally have the correct information up there.

You can't have a goalie mask post and not include Josh Harding. Harding has a new and classy mask every season.

Here's Harding's new mask.

Here are all of Harding's past masks:

Yep, Chris, you were right. This was certainly worth waiting for. I still can't believe Brodeur changed his mask after virtually forever.

And it's interesting to see how the masks have changed over the years.. well, the recent years, when they started putting radical designs on it. I like the Fuhr-inspired helmet because it has that classic feel to it.

I assume that, because of his absence, Osgood still has the old-style cage mask.

I listened to Brodeur's conference call on itunes the other day. He said his brother, who runs his new website, designed his new mask logo.

I like this preview. It's kinda neat and it's very hard to find any information on the Internet on updated goalie masks.

However, I do agree with a commenter...the picture sizes are too small to notice any of the mask detail.

Marty Biron will have a special Bernie Parent inspired mask to debut soon. I'm willing to bet it will be with the orange jersey.

It isn't the best picture, but Conklin's got an octopus breaking through the familiar igloo...and the octopus has a "two-face" theme.

I knew right when the Hurricanes released their third jersey that Wardo would make a mask to match it. And it looks GREAT!!! I was at the Red Wings vs Canes game when they debuted the AWESOME black jerseys. And I must say. They look very threatening in them. LETS GO CANES!!!!!!

Goalie mask detail is too minute to appreciate in an image as small as those which you posted on the site Chris. Goalie masks are the only truly original pieces of art on the ice so it would only be right to post high resolution photos or at the very least links to high-quality photos.

How can a Lightning fan not mention Mike Smith's new mask? I was watching the game last night, and the announcers were talking about it, how it was based off Saw V. Some dumb marketing ploy because Oren Koules is part owner of the team, and the producer of the Saw movies. Either way, surprised you didn't mention it.

I'm with you man, but you're lucky there are any pictures at all. I can only post what's available on the web for free. If you can find any photos that are higher quality, feel free to send them along and I'll post them.

And that's why I didn't mention it. But in all fairness, I guess it deserves to be included. I'll be adding several more later today.

lol yeah, I agree that it's silly, and I certainly understand why you didn't mention it, heh. Either way, Chris. I'm a big fan of the site, keep up the good work!

Mikael Tellqvist has a new mask. I've only seen two pictures of it and don't know what's on it, but I wish he'd have kept last year's design. That thing was great.

Budaj's mask is not the Hulk believe it or not.
