The Slow News Day

Seriously, nothing seems to be going on today. Yesterday I had five posts. Seven on Sunday. Today, I'm barely going to get this one to count for Thursday. Anyway, it was a nice break and it gave me some time to start putting together next week's Icethetics Season Preview.

Anyway, just so you guys aren't left with nothing tonight, I'll respond to a few of the emails I've been getting pretty frequently these days.

No, the Detroit Red Wings are not changing the nameplate lettering on their jerseys. This is something we seem to go through every year around this time.

During the regular season and playoffs, each player has a custom made arched nameplate on his back. Obviously, something of that nature requires considerable time and effort — something wasted on the dozens of guys who are only trying out in the preseason and won't actually make the team. So a simpler lettering process is put to use.

That's a sample of what they're using for the preseason. Everything will be back to normal once the regular season begins. Count on it.

...

Back in July, I wrote up a bit after the draft about the Ducks enlarging the wordmark on the front of the jerseys. There appears to be new evidence of that in photos of preseason action.

It's a step in the right direction, Anaheim. Now if you just drop the UCKS, you'll have a happy camper over here.

...

The Ottawa Sun, who I was recently mean to has pictures of Darth— pardon, Martin Gerber's new helmet.

Gerber made waves last season by wearing an unpainted black goalie helmet. It earned him the nickname Darth. Apparently he liked it because he's had his new helmet painted like Darth Vader.

During the Goalie Mask Tournament at NHLToL several months ago, he was unsurprisingly defeated in the first round, garnering only 25% of the vote against Mathieu Garon.

That's all I've got for tonight. Hopefully there's more going on tomorrow. If nothing else, I'll at least have some concept art for your viewing pleasure.

the ducks jerseys do look a little better with the bigger logo, would look great w/o the word marks and just the "D" as the logo. as for gerbers mask, i personally think its one of the coolest lookin masks in the league. i hate ottawa, but the mask is cool. just my opinion.

Has the log.. sorry, "wordmark" on the Ducks' jersey always been slanted? Maybe my eyes are playing tricks on me. It looks slanted here, and I can't remember it being like that.

Gerber does have a sweet mask. Chris, can you post a link to the Goalie Mask Tourney? I'd love to see it.

It really took me a while to find Vader in the mask. Its a stretch.

Maybe the vader imagery should be on the sides. Maybe a silhouette with his red light saber (goes well with Sens color scheme). Maybe his tie-fighter or a star destroyer on the other side.

Awesome idea, poor execution.

No kidding Chris, all they need to do is Make the D bigger.

Who are they listenting to for ideas?

"let's just make the word mark bigger!"

Send some of these designers and marketers back to college or the unemployment line, let's pick up a couple of hobos soaking in their bum piss beds and give them a chance to design pro jerseys. They might do better...and only work for liquor.

I'd settle for the Ducks going back to the "Duck breaking through the ice" logo, if it weren't still owned by Disney. Anything is better than what they're wearing now, although the Sabres' "slug" and the Oilers' "pajamas" are in that group as well.

I saw that Vader mask the other day on another site and thought it was very well done. If Vader was put on the other side of the mask I think the design would have been pointless.

Every year, Wings fans start calling sports shops asking about the "new font" on the backs of the players' jerseys, and I get at least a dozen emails on the Snapshots blog from people asking what the heck is going on. It really is a matter of expediency.
