IceHL Pacific: Final Names

The final names for the IceHL's Pacific Division are in! Hundreds of you made your voice heard by rating the 20 finalists for each franchise. So here they are.

  • Alaska HUSKIES
average rating 3.69/5 by 417 people

  • California WAVE
average rating 2.87/5 by 337 people

  • Portland PIONEERS
average rating 3.76/5 by 363 people

  • Seattle AVIATORS
average rating 3.56/5 by 346 people

  • Vancouver LUMBERJACKS
average rating 2.91/5 by 313 people

Based on these names, your task — should you choose to accept it — is to brand the franchise. You choose the color scheme and design primary, secondary and script logos around that. Additional logos may or may not be included in the voting process.

Submit your logo art by email to me at icethetics@gmail.com. Do not post links to artwork in the comments. They will be deleted and not considered for use in this project. I'm also outlining guidelines for submissions below. I'm taking them a lot more seriously than I did for the IHA. If you don't follow them, your work will probably not be included.

Pacific logo submission deadline: October 11

If you want your submission included, follow these instructions:
  • DO NOT STEAL ARTWORK. Logos copied or adapted from professional trademarked logos will not be permitted.

  • Submit three (3) logos: primary, secondary and script. Use a white background. If your logo requires a white outline (think Lightning or Capitals), then use a gray background with the white outline included. ALL 3 LOGOS will be used in the voting process. If you leave out one, your work may be disqualified.

  • Submit vector art if possible. I will accept .ai, .psd and .pdf files. If you cannot submit vector art, you must be able to provide high quality images in .jpg or .png files ONLY. All other file types may be disqualified.

  • You must include your credit within the graphic itself as well as the email. This can be your real name or a pseudonym. I need them in both places so I can easily search my email to find your artwork and email address. Failure to do so may result in disqualification.

  • By submitting your own original artwork to any Icethetics email address, you agree to grant permission of its use for online or print publication by Icethetics. Do not watermark your logos or they will be disqualified.

  • No jersey concepts, please. That will be a later step in this process.

I tried to be specific here but I'm happy to answer any additional questions you may have via email. I was very clear about this but keep in mind that if you do not properly follow the instructions above, your work will likely be disqualified. So read them carefully.

Just so everyone is aware, when it comes time to choose a logo for each team, the process will work the same as the name ratings. Logo rating pages will be posted for each team and up to 20 logo submissions will be available to rate. I'm sorry I can't include more but this assures that all worthy submissions will get a fair shake.

The difference here is that once the rating period has ended, there will be a vote on Icethetics of the top 3 rated logos for each team. This assures that we choose the logo everyone wants.

Start submitting your logos!

Can we see the voting results somewhere?
I mean, Vancouver Vipers... come on.
Hehe.

I agree, can we see the results... the last time I checked Lumberjacks where winning by a a bit (.25 or something), I just really don't like vipers as the name... Vancouver gets flak for having a logo that seems to mean nothing to the name or city, last thing we need is to have a name that means nothing to the city or area. It also sounds like a pee-wee team to me. And yes I know this is only a fantasy league.... but other then that I like the rest of the names are good so far... But as Artibeus said "Vancouver Vipers... come on." Anyhow sorry to complaining, I was just hoping for better for my home team.

Yeah, cause "Lumberjacks" would be so much better. Let's just deal with it fellas and move on.

Sorry about that... I completely spaced somehow. The Lumberjacks did get the higher rating and this post now reflects that. Sorry for the confusion.

thanks Chris... We wont hold it against you, you probably have a lot to work on so its no problem, glad to see that Lumberjacks did win.

And to Canis... Lumberjacks just makes more sense... and can still produce some sweet logos.

I'm gonna echo the sentiments of some of the other folks on that visit this blog. Creativity is the hallmark of interest. What I've seen is a mundane sense of normality with all the choices. From the city allocations to the team nicknames. All I'm saying is Vipers would have stepped out of the realm of average and predictability. Alas, I just go with the flow and am only offering my useless opinion. Take it or leave it, it's still a fun site.

all the names really have to mean something? come on... who are the kings of LA? the rappers?

I like the meanings, but sometimes it gets overused, like the candidates to Detroit, all car-likes

Just a thought, but could we change the formats of the voting on the logos to a rating system like we did with the names? It gives a chance to more people to get their work out there, leading to a better selection of designs and a more honest assessment of the best logo.

I should also mention, it should seriously cut down on people complaining about their logo not being included.

i second cptjeff's brilliant idea. would that include the secondary and tertiary logos as well?

I think all these names are great. They all have some meaning to the area and I believe all have great logo potential.

1. Why would you need the vector art? We aren't making real merchandise of all this, are we? I would think to upload it on the website so people can see you would need a .png file. I wouldn't want to just give up the vector art like that. Maybe if my logo won, I might, but not right out of the gate. And BTW, .psd is not vector.

2. If this is a serious contest and people make quality logos that aren't watermarked, what's to stop someone from cutting out a logo and stealing it? Again, maybe you could have the winner un-watermark it(or, collect watermarked and un-watermarked images, and only display watermarked ones until the winner is chosen and you show a clean version), but if I'm going to be designing logos, especially since I'm not getting paid, this raises some red flags for me.

Sorry if this comes off as complaining, it's really just precautionary. Thanks.

Ok... maybe read the post first? That's almost exactly what I said we're doing. But because I want a two-tiered process for these logos, the top 3 rated logos will go up for a vote at the end of the rating period.

Right, well that was my plan all along. LOL. And again, I wrote "ALL 3 LOGOS will be used in the voting process." Tertiary logos may be included but don't count on it. I'm just asking for these three: primary, secondary, and script.

Help me out a little here, guys and read the post before asking questions I've already answered. Otherwise there really isn't a point to me writing it at all.

Gingerbread Mann... if you're concerns are that serious, I recommend not participating.

However, keep in mind that I'm not posting the raw vector art online. I'm the only one who will have access to it and I harbor no ill will toward anyone with great design skills. Having the vector art just makes it for me to be able to build graphics for the site. Hope that helps. Thanks!

Woops, didn't have my coffee yet. Glad you gotta chuckle Chris. :-)

Chris: thanks for the explanation. Let me just say that I am not a professional by any means. However, stolen work surfaces a lot more often than you think and with 400,000 unique visitors coming here like you said I think it is a legitimate concern. I don't know if I'll participate or not, and I doubt that I could create anything really good that would be "good enough to steal," however, some of the IHA logos have been very good and with this contest and creating a whole identity, I am just saying you should not just laugh it off(which I'm not suggesting you are, btw.) because it does happen a lot.

I trust you, no doubt, handling this the right way but there will probably be some great designs entered and if there are no watermarks don't be surprised(this goes for any prospective designer too, but some of you might already know) if some identity mysteriously shows up elsewhere. That's all I'm trying to say.

I still can't wait to see how this ends up though. Don't get me wrong. :)

To Gingerbread Mann:

A .psd file can be vector in some cases. Photoshop has vector tools, and when saved in a .psd file, the logo remains in vector.

GBM said...

Lucas: OK, I could be wrong. I thought Photoshop handled vector in and through EPS files.

Alaska will have a great logo. I'm sure.

I wish I could draw a Husky...

I hate that some of my great ideas for logos are limited by my drawing talent.

I can visualize it and be like "Man that would looks so damn good!"

Then I put pen to paper and it looks nothing like it did in my head...

Oh, is there a certain size that is recommended. Canvas size, I mean.
