IceHL Central: Final Names

The final names for the IceHL's Central Division are in! Hundreds of you made your voice heard by rating the finalists for each franchise. So here are the winners.

  • Chicago HITMEN
average rating 3.53/5 by 403 people

  • Detroit MOTORHEADS
average rating 2.88/5 by 328 people

  • Milwaukee LAGERS
average rating 2.92/5 by 312 people

  • Minnesota MAMMOTHS
average rating 3.53/5 by 327 people

  • St. Louis ARCHERS
average rating 3.85/5 by 376 people

Based on these names, your task — should you choose to accept it — is to brand the franchise. You choose the color scheme and design primary, secondary and script logos around that. Additional logos may or may not be included in the voting process.

Submit your logo art by email to me at icethetics@gmail.com. Do not post links to artwork in the comments. They will be deleted and not considered for use in this project. I'm also outlining guidelines for submissions below. I'm taking them a little more seriously than I did for the IHA. If you don't follow them, your work will probably not be included.

Central logo submission deadline: October 18

If you want your submission included, follow these instructions:
  • DO NOT STEAL ARTWORK. Logos copied or adapted from professional trademarked logos will not be permitted.

  • Submit three (3) logos: primary, secondary and script. Use a white background. If your logo requires a white outline (think Lightning or Capitals), then use a gray background with the white outline included. ALL 3 LOGOS will be used in the voting process. If you leave out one, your work may be disqualified.

  • Submit vector art if possible. I will accept .ai, .psd and .pdf files. If you cannot submit vector art, you must be able to provide high quality images in .jpg or .png files ONLY. All other file types may be disqualified.

  • You must include your credit within the graphic itself as well as the email. This can be your real name or a pseudonym. I need them in both places so I can easily search my email to find your artwork and email address. Failure to do so may result in disqualification.

  • By submitting your own original artwork to any Icethetics email address, you agree to grant permission of its use for online or print publication by Icethetics. Do not watermark your logos or they will be disqualified.

  • No jersey concepts, please. That will be a later step in this process.

I tried to be specific here but I'm happy to answer any additional questions you may have via email. I was very clear about this but keep in mind that if you do not properly follow the instructions above, your work will likely be disqualified. So read them carefully.

Just so everyone is aware, when it comes time to choose a logo for each team, the process will work basically the same as the name ratings. Logo rating pages will be posted for each team and up to 20 logo submissions will be available to rate. I'm sorry I can't include more but this assures that all worthy submissions will get a fair shake.

The difference here is that once the rating period has ended, there will be a vote on Icethetics of the top 3 rated logos for each team. This assures that we choose the logo everyone wants.

Start submitting your logos!

I personally don't have the creativity to come up with something, nor the time, but I would love to see somebody make a color scheme (presumably Archers) with green in it. In my opinion there aren't enough teams that have a good-looking green uniform.

Weren't the Chicago Hitmen an XFL team?

@ Drew Celestino,

No, there was no Chicago Hitmen. The XFL team was the Chicago Enforcers (the Hitmen were New York's XFL team)

the Calgary Hitmen play in the WHL... i don't know about anyone else but i think we need something a little more original or the Chicago team here

There's already the Calgary Hitmen in the WHL, so why was it even allowed to be voted on as a team name option for any city?

@Flyersk27

The rules say "No NHL or WHA names, nor any current AHL or ECHL names".

It says NOTHING about CHL names (refer to the Alaska Huskies for more info).

@ mburmy:

Thanks for clarifying. I knew one of them had that name. Kinda sad that we remember that, isn't it? lol

OK, here's my POV on all that:

Chicago Hitmen: Cool name! Doesn't even have to be overly violent-can just picture a tough-guy hockey player!

Detroit Motorheads: Excellent in the tradition of the Motor City teams-logo will be something cool too!

Milwaukee Lagers: The name is AWESOME-and the logo will be too! (maybe you can think of the Brewers' old beer barrel man playing hockey-not a copy, of course-just a tad different look)

Minnesota Mammoths - I'd love to see that big mammoth standing upright and playing-might even be a goalie!

St. Louis Archers - That was my nomination, and I'm proud of it winning! The logo will be cool too!

Great job again, guys! Can't wait till the North (or Northeast) team name nominees are rated!

i like all these names

and the st louis archers were one of the names consitered as a name for a NFL expansion team in st louis, before the rams moved there

For the St. Louis Archers, I wonder how many of the logo submissions will be centered around the Gateway Arch, and how many will actually do an archer.

If I was artistic enough to design a logo, I would put an archer under the arch, similar to the new Blues' 3rd. And I'd make it green, because STL already has the Cards (RED), the Rams (GOLD and BLUE), and the Blues (BLUE). Orange and Yellow are disgusting, as is Purple. Thus...Green. Find the right shade, and it's a shoo-in!

Hey, the Kings can make purple look pretty good.. they choose not to by not putting it as their dark background. Put to the very left of this text box for me is the Kings' shield alternate, primary at the time. Whenever you see it in pictures, it looks blue because the light distorts the color, but it really is a very distinct purple color. And in those two logos to the left, the purples looks really nice.

Alright, I'll concede that point. It can work. Especially if it's just a logo right now, where they can't screw up the uniforms.

The name Detroit Motorheads isn´t very good it´s sounds too much like Motörhead...
But the other names are good! :)

Proud to see my Lagers won for the name. I'll probably try my hand at a logo for them, and I'm already half done with a Mammoths logo.
