Flashback 1998: Alternate Logos

Yesterday I introduced the subject of the next tournament of logos: the 1998-99 NHL logos. A lot of you seem pretty excited about it and so am I.

Like I mentioned, this tournament will be different because in the preliminary round, we'll be deciding the best logos of each individual team. The top vote-getters there will go on to the tournament bracket. Yesterday I wrote that it would be primary vs. secondary, but that wasn't entirely accurate. We're actually going to include all of the alternate logos teams used — including those on third jerseys. Below are all of the alternate logos that will be included.

The first polls get posted tomorrow! We'll be doing two at a time starting with the best of the Kings and Blackhawks. You'll find those polls in the pollbar. Each will be open for four days.

Glad to see the secondaries as part of the tourney. Nice touch Chris.

I love that Oilers secondary. I was hoping that would have evolved into their 3rd jersey. And the NYR Statue of Liberty logo is pretty sweet. That was a great jersey.

this might be a homer pick, but the best looking logo up there is the fin. God i miss it.

These are all really good..the Sabres, the Fin, the Kings, and always loved the Avalanch foot. I always hated the Ducks but this one isn't nearly as aweful as their primary at that time. Should make for an interesting tourney.

Thank you. That's exactly what I was looking for. I'll add it later tonight.

Welcome. Glad I could help.

ok now this tourney is looking a bit more original, but I still think we could've been a little more creative.

Man, that is awesome to see all the logos in one spot. Those were some of the best logos. Such creativity and talent and just overall amazing logos that went away from the dull and plain we have now. The teams using wordmarks should take a look back 10 years ago at these logos for an example on how to do it right.

My bet's on the Rangers Statue of Liberty logo... with all the nice alts we have today, I'm surprised at how few good ones there are here.

I agree with Matt. Wordmarks make horrible logos. My favorite team is the Ducks, but man do I hate their logo. Thank God for the OKC Thunder, without them the Ducks would have the worst logo in sports.

It's a shame too, because the Ducks rebrand on this site is amazing. Oh, what could have been.

Wordmarks aren't always the best, but I think that some are pretty good and could have been worth adding into here (different contest idea?).

word marks would be a great tournament

Two Rangers and missing the Isles? Boo.

The lighthouse was great, fisherman was horrible.

i love that preds logo

Nyi28nhl, the isles abandoned the fisherman design and lighthouse that season.

however, where are the four bars logo that they introduced that season representing the 4 stanley cups chris?

I'm not sure the four bars on the Isles' shoulders really counts as an alternate logo. It's more of a patch, like the Canadiens' 100 year anniversary or the All-Star Game patch.

It's a shoulder patch, like all these alternate logos, and it has been there for a decade. Longer than an anniversary or all-star game one.

I've never even seen that Phoenix's third alternate logo. What is it? A gekko or something like that? Horrible.

My faves are Kings' crown logo and Rangers' Lady Liberty.

I can see the Cane's alt doing well here!

xxtool7723xx and nyi28nhl do have a point:

Notice the location of the four bars.

I love that islander's lighthouse logo, a variation of that should be a better primary than their current smilie face classic logo.

Oh no the lizard.. It was on the shoulders of the old green Phoenix thirds. I've never seen it anywhere besides that (thankfully).
